The Priory is an ideal location for enjoying the unspoilt
beauty of the North and West Highland of Scotland.
In the 13th Century Cistercian monks built a Priory here,
deciding that Beauly was the ideal spot for their secluded meditation
and worship. They found fulfillment through strict rules on diet,
silence and hard work.
It is said that when Mary Queen of Scots came to our village she
exclaimed, 'Oui. C'est un beau lieu.' Well 400 years later the eponymous
description still fits. In fact, Beauly recently won the title, 'Best
Large Village' in the Britain in Bloom competition. An beyond the
cornucopia of flowers bedecking the market square, Beauly is in the
midst of some of Scotland's finest mountains and glens. Glen Affric,
Glen Cannich and Strathfarrer are on Beauly's doorstep.

The Royal Hotel was originally built by the Middletons
of Davidston as a house, with a pork-curing business alongside.
The building was later modified and extended to become the Admiral
Napier Hotel in 1851 and later the Royal Hotel
In 1913 the Cromarty Firth became a naval base and the hotel was
‘nationalised’ as part of the Cromarty Firth State Management District,
which controlled all sales of alcohol around the Firth. It remained
state controlled until 1972.
The hotel was extensively modernised in the spring of 1930 (see
Eric Malcolm’s ‘The Cromarty We Knew’ for details). At the outbreak
of war in 1939 part of the hotel was commandeered by the Navy, who
manned the examination vessels inspecting neutral shipping in the
Moray Firth.
