Alness in Bloom

We travel via Alness, a wee town which has won Britain in Bloom Competition 5 times. Photo opportunity here to snap the lovely displays

Beauly

Visit the 13c ruined Priory and marvel at the 800 year old elm tree reputed to be the oldest Elm in Europe.

Loch Ness

Wonder at britain's largest volume of water at over 900ft deep it is 3 times deeper than the North Sea.

There are no medals for spotting 'Nessie' here as we will guarantee a photo with her.

INVERNESS.

Inverness was one of the chief strongholds of the Picts, and in AD 565 was visited by St Columba with the intention of converting the Pictish king Brude, who is supposed to have resided in the vitrified fort on Craig Phadrig, 2.4 km west of the city.

Granted City status for the millennium, Inverness is the capital of the Highlands with a population of around 50,000+

Clava Cairns

Situated just a cannon shot away from Culloden Battlefield is the bronze age burial ground Clava.

No published excavations have established the dates for the Clava monuments, but they are thought to belong to the Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age (about 2500 - 1700 BC).

Brodie Castle,

The castle itself was the home of the Brodie family until the late 20th century. In fact the family's association with the area goes back further than the building of the castle, possibly as far as 1160 when it is believed Malcolm IV gave these lands to the Brodies. In 1645, the castle came under attack from Montrose's army and sustained some damage, but thankfully survived. Today, you can see the additions made to the building in the 17th and 19th centuries.

The Clootie Well

The holy well at Munlochy is said to date back to - and probably beyond - the time of St Boniface or Curitan, who worked as a missionary in Scotland in about AD620. Pilgrims would come, perform a ceremony that involved circling the well sunwise three times before splashing some of its water on the ground and making a prayer. They would then tie a piece of cloth or "cloot" that had been in contact with the ill person to a nearby tree.
